World Bridge: Connecting students, cultures, and stories.

At 蜜桃视频, World Bridge, an initiative launched in Spring 2024 by the Office of Intercultural Student Life, creates a space where international students share their cultures through food, art, and activities, bringing the world a little closer to campus.

鈥淲e want students to learn and expand their horizons,鈥 said Ashton Leigh, Assistant Director of Intercultural Student Life. 鈥淲e want international students to feel celebrated here on campus, and we want fun opportunities for them to share their home country and culture.鈥 Each event features different countries. Past events have highlighted Brazil, Egypt, and Pakistan, while this fall showcased Turkmenistan, with additional countries still to be announced. International students lead each session by sharing their countries through cuisine, activities, and cultural demonstrations. Luana Johnson, a senior majoring in Visual Communication Design, a presenter from Brazil, explained: 鈥淢ost people think Brazil is all about nature, but we're so much more. We have a lot of technology and innovation.鈥 Her comments reflected a larger theme of World Bridge: there is always something new to learn about different countries if we make the effort to expand our horizons. Johnson also emphasized the importance of these efforts in academic settings: 鈥淚 think it's important to talk about the art and science of other cultures. Showing techniques and professionals of other countries can be very enriching for us as students.鈥

Arslan Kalandrov, a sophomore double-majoring in International Studies and Human Development and Family Sciences, representing Turkmenistan, shared his motivation to participate: 鈥淲hen I came to the US and I saw other international students representing their country in spaces like these, I said to myself, 鈥榃hy am I not doing that?鈥... Turkmenistan has a vibrant culture and tradition, and that鈥檚 why I want to share it with others.鈥 He highlighted that cultural exchange fosters empathy and creates a sense of belonging, as well as a feeling of being part of a community and sharing new perspectives. At the Turkmenistan event, students joined a lively dance battle, practiced traditional moves, and even tried on a telpek, the country鈥檚 iconic hat. Traditional Turkmen dishes were shared, and the presenters鈥 joy and pride were contagious. Their stories and energy helped everyone connect more deeply with the culture.

Through World Bridge, 蜜桃视频 State students build connections, foster empathy, and experience a sense of community across cultures. As Kalandrov put it: 鈥淚f you go to someone and if they know my country鈥檚 name or anything about my country, I will be so proud of myself.鈥

Whether you鈥檙e an international student hoping to showcase your heritage or a domestic student eager to learn, World Bridge offers an opportunity to celebrate, share, and expand your horizons. Any student interested in contributing or representing their country can visit Intercultural Student Life for more information or stop by their office.
