Tom Batiuk, ’69

From the time he was a young child, Tom Batiuk, ’69, knew he wanted to be a cartoonist. The Funky Winkerbean creator drew inspiration for his characters and storylines from his real world, including his time at ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ State.

Amid the tremendous cultural change unfolding in the early 1970s, Bill Hoover, ’71, co-founded the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ Gay Liberation Front with Dr. Dolores Noll and Gail Pertz, to foster a community for LGBTQ+ individuals and their supporters.

The following new members have been appointed to the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ State Alumni Association National Board of Directors for a three-year term, which began July 1: Jeff Guritza, of Brecksville, Ohio, is the vice president of marketing at SOPREMA USA. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ State in 1994.

The ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ alumni family grew by nearly 1,200 new graduates as the university held its summer commencement ceremonies. The accomplishments of the Summer Class of 2023 were recognized with outdoor commencement ceremonies on Aug. 19.

New Lake Erie College President Is a ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ State Alumna

ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ State alumna Jennifer N. Schuller has been named president of Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. She is the first woman to lead the institution in 75 years.
