On October 12, 1985, a 6-foot egg (constructed by ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ State technology students) was rolled onto the 50-yard line during halftime of ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ State's Homecoming game at Dix Stadium.
Earlier in the day, the egg rode in a nest down Main Street in the Homecoming parade, on a float with ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ State cheerleaders.
In a cloud of smoke at midfield, the egg hatched and Flash the Golden Eagle (eaglet) emerged.
"Baby Flash" is shown here, shortly after hatching, with an actual golden eagle, also named Flash, who appeared at select ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ State athletic events until the mid-90s. To read about the progression of mascots, visit /magazine/news/forerunners-flash.
